Since my residency program at Emory in Atlanta, I developed a special interest in obstetrics. As a student and resident, I always thought that our training program was head and shoulders above the other specialties, for the most interesting cases. In practice, using the principles of functional medicine, I apply my knowledge of the microbiome, providing adequacy of nutrition and using food as medicine, and principles of detoxification (that is in the avoidance of exposure to toxins) especially with respect to the exposure of the unborn. I look forward to offering an online format for prenatal education in the near future, instead of a traditional prenatal class. We provide handouts to our patients to provide guidelines on diet, medications and recognizing the signs of labor, as well as warning signs at each stage of pregnancy. Since we are a small office, we have a personal touch, and we get to know our patients, as they get to know us.
